Governor and First Lady Edwards attended a National Governor’s Association meeting earlier this year and learned that nearly 272,760 children suffer from Childhood hunger in Louisiana. They were also made aware of national best practices, federal policies and funding sources available to help solve this issue. Ending childhood hunger is a priority for Louisiana. Implementation of the statewide No Kid Hungry Campaign will increase access to breakfast, lunch and summer meals for Louisiana’s children. The No Kid Hungry Louisiana Campaign will also work to shine a spotlight on the crisis of child hunger in Louisiana, creating a powerful movement of individuals committed to bold action. The six main goals of the campaign include:

  1. Launch a No Kids Hungry Louisiana Kick-Off Event
  2. Achieve 100% CEP participation within the next 2 years. (Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is a meal service option for schools and school districts in low-income areas.)
  3. Increase breakfast participation for all students.
  4. Target increasing school breakfast participation in the Louisiana Delta Region.
  5. Focus on increasing Summer Food Service Participation throughout the state.
  6. Increase Afterschool Meal Participation.

Dr. Dana Hunter, Executive Director of the Children’s Cabinet is the leading the charge for the No Kid Hungry Louisiana Campaign. The Children’s Cabinet serves as the governing body for the State of Louisiana responsible for coordinating funding and programmatic services at the state and local level, related to children and their families.
