Building upon the success of the cooking club at Martha Vinyard which was created by their school cafeteria manager, a Farm to School program was established in 2015 with the purpose of integrating food and agriculture education along with wellness promotion into the elementary school culture.
Child nutrition staff coordinated a farm field trip to Liuzza Family Farms during National Farm to School Month (October), held a taste test featuring local squash and invited a local farmer to the school who spoke to the students about farming and the importance of knowing where your food comes from and supporting local farmers. School nutrition staff followed the tasting with a nutrition education lesson.
